The History of the Christmas Markets

The History of the Christmas Markets

The air is crisp, the lights are twinkling, and the scent of cinnamon and roasted almonds fills the streets. For many, the sight of traditional wooden chalets, glittering ornaments, and steaming mugs of mulled wine signals the start of the festive season. Of course, we are referring to the yearly Christmas Markets, a cornerstone of winter cheer in cities across the UK.

These incredible, but sadly temporary, winter wonderlands are far from a modern invention, and have quite a bit of history behind them. The tradition is rooted in the medieval German-speaking part of Europe, initially serving a far more practical purpose than simply building festive cheer.

This is the story of how the Christmas Markets evolved from a simple medieval necessity into the yearly magical event we love and look forward to today, and how you can join the celebrations this year.

The deep-rooted history of the Christmas Markets

The start of the world-renowned Christmas Market can be traced back to the late Middle Ages (roughly 1300 to 1500 AD) in areas that once belonged to the Roman Empire, covering parts of modern-day Germany, Austria, and France. These markets were not initially about gifts or decorations; they were all about winter survival.

FROM NECESSITY TO TRADITION

The very first markets were known simply as “December markets” or “winter markets”, and they were a lot less fun and cheerful than the markets we know today. They were essentially there to give people the chance to stock up on meat, winter necessities, and supplies that would be hard to come by during the coldest months of the year. Here is a brief timeline of the early development of the Christmas markets we know today:

The earliest documented version of what would become the modern Christmas Market dates back to 1296. Duke Albert I of Austria granted Viennese traders the privilege of holding a “December market” to give the local population a chance to pick up last-minute supplies. This helped ensure that local communities had enough food and drink to last through winter.

An early mention of a “St. Nicholas market” popped up in Munich in 1310. These markets slowly began to change their focus, giving the opportunity to local, creative crafters (like toy makers and confectioners) to set up small shops or stalls. This is the point in time that marks the move from purely practical goods to small gifts for children, traditionally given on St. Nicholas’ Day (December 6th).

Dresden’s “Striezelmarkt” is recognised as the first and now the oldest Christmas Market in the world. First held in 1434, the Striezelmarkt went all out on the concept of selling seasonal goods and festive trinkets, paving the way that spread across the German-speaking world, becoming what we know today as a Christmas Market.

The modern evolution of the Christmas Market

By the 17th and 18th centuries, the markets were in full swing. Governments began to regulate their location and operating times, a sign of their growing importance to the economy and social life. The 19th and 20th centuries saw the tradition spread around the world, giving everyone a chance to experience the magic of these Christmas Markets.

HOW THE CHRISTMAS MARKETS CAME TO THE UK

The UK’s connection to good old German Christmas traditions is older than the markets themselves. In fact, Queen Charlotte, who was born and raised in Germany, is credited as the person who popularised the decorated Christmas tree in Britain back in 1800. However, the German-style Christmas Market as we know it today is a much more recent phenomenon.

The first modern variation of the Christmas Market in the UK was established in Lincoln as recently as 1982. This was inspired by a visit to its twin town, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, in Germany. The initial market featured just eleven stalls, planting the seed for the major festive events we see today.

Manchester was an early adopter of the idea of large-scale celebrations in the form of Christmas Markets. It all started with a single market set up in St Ann’s Square in 1999. It was an instant hit and quickly became one of the country’s most famous Christmas Markets. From there, the markets continued to grow bigger and better each year, and now span multiple squares and streets across the city centre. Manchester paved the way and really set the standard for UK-wide festive celebrations!

What makes the modern markets so magical?

Today’s markets still hold onto some of the humble beginnings of their medieval ancestors (by offering basic food and drink), while still offering the pure festive spectacle we have come to expect. They are an invitation to indulge in a complete seasonal experience. Here are some of the most important aspects of a wunderbar Christmas Market:

  • Sights, sounds and smells: Those festive aromas of roasted nuts, cinnamon, and mulled wine; the sounds of carols and festive music; and the sight of hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights and incredibly decorated fir trees.
  • The delicious food: While medieval markets sold meat and basic food goods, modern markets offer far more! Think pretzels, French crêpes, Dutch pancakes, and locally themed treats, creating a feast of international and regional flavours. You can’t forget the classic Yorkshire pudding wrap!
  • The experience: Some markets up the game by offering features like Ferris wheels, ice rinks, and Christmas-themed games, like knock the Santa down with a snowball, turning the shopping experience into a full-day out.

Experiencing the festive season in some of the UK’s major cities

Across the UK, the spirit of the Christmas Markets is alive and well. Each city embraces the tradition, adding its own character to create a unique festive destination. Whether you’re looking for a more traditional celebration in Birmingham or a full-scale, elaborate celebration in London, there is something for everyone around the country.

LONDON CHRISTMAS MARKETS

There are so many options for the London Christmas markets, spread out across the capital far and wide. You can find everything from the large, spectacular Hyde Park Winter Wonderland to smaller, artisan-focused markets. Areas like Southbank, featuring its riverside views, and Covent Garden, with its dazzling light displays, transform into winter wonderlands.

London’s markets are known for their spectacular backdrops, blending modern lights and decorations against historic landmarks like Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. The options in London are unmatched, offering something for every mood, whether you’re looking for something more traditional or a high-energy carnival atmosphere.

MANCHESTER CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Manchester was a pioneer in bringing the German market tradition to the north. The Manchester Christmas markets are renowned for their incredible scale and for being spread across multiple city sites, including the central hub at Piccadilly Gardens and the more traditional stalls in St Ann’s Square.

The number and the diversity of stalls (From German street food to unique handcrafted gifts) make it a must-visit festive destination. If you’re in Manchester over Christmas, something you have to see is the giant light-up Santa in St. Peter’s Square! It’s no wonder millions of visitors flock to the city, cementing Manchester’s reputation as a Christmas Market powerhouse.

LIVERPOOL CHRISTMAS MARKETS

BIRMINGHAM CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Birmingham’s market is unique in the UK due to its official tie to the traditions’ homeland in Germany. Birmingham hosts the largest authentic German Christmas market outside Germany and Austria. The Birmingham Christmas Markets, officially known as the Frankfurt Christmas Market, is a direct result of the long-standing partnership between the two cities.

It is celebrated for its authenticity, featuring traditional pretzels, Bratwursts and genuine German crafts. Located primarily along New Street and Victoria Square, the market draws heavily on its German heritage, providing a dense, highly traditional experience that feels like stepping straight onto the continent.
